Let me introduce you to the exercise video that made it all happen for me.

My Intro To Fitness, Esquire 30 Minute Workout

Now, my mom is a Richard Simmons fanatic, something that used to make me throw my head back and roll my eyes. However, he was on to something with making fitness fun with good music and positive motivation. It’s just that…Simmons just isn’t for me.

So, I went digging a little deeper in our VHS cabinet for a workout video circa 1980-something. See, my family was not fitness or nutrition-conscious at all. It’s amazing that we even owned a workout video, but that’s another story.

When I decided to begin my fitness journey, this was the only resource available to me, aside from some equally-old Jane Fonda workouts at the library. So, I did it as often as I could, and it provided a nice baseline endurance level for me to make the leap into running. There was a lot of running in place, aerobics and body-weight exercises in that video, like you might expect. I realize now that all I ever needed was a pair of running shoes, but it never occurred to me to run. I thought I hated running. I was still too close to those horrid memories of the ill-fated gym class mile.

I credit this video with getting me started in my fitness quest. I always felt so good after I worked up a sweat and felt that stretched-out feeling in my lungs. This is where the endorphin rush originated for me and got me hooked.

I wonder what the story is behind my mom buying this video in the first place….Ah, another story.

My husband and I recently weeded through our video collection and decided, reluctantly, to let go of our VHS movies (am I that old?). I just had to get one last picture of this hallmark fitness tool before I sent it to the thrift store. What a memory!

Personal Weight Loss Update

It’s been almost a year since I made a weight gain confession. At the highest point, my weight crept up 11 pounds. I am happy to say that I am now within about 5 lbs of where I was last year. I’ll take it! Now, I’m not trying to be superficial here about a few pounds, but when you’ve been the same weight for three years and pounds appear out of nowhere, there could be reason for concern.

Let me share with you what I’ve learned:

1. There is nothing medically wrong with me. I went through a slew of tests, including thyroid function, which showed that I am just fine. Thank goodness. I couldn’t be more grateful.

2. I met with an on-site nutritionist that we have at work. She looked over some of my food journals and said “you’re doing everything right.” It is so reassuring hearing those words. I know I am doing everything I possibly can, but I needed to be told by a professional that I’m not seeing something no one else sees. She told me that if she put me in a room with 30 other people my age, I would have the toughest time losing weight. There is something about our genes and the way we’re built that you can’t always just nail down with a simple eat-this-many-calories-per-day-to-lose-weight equation. That doesn’t give me an excuse, it gives me a new reason to work extra hard.

3. I met with an on-site wellness coordinator that we also have at work. I told her what was going on and she suggested adding one extra day of workouts to my regimen. I hate that suggestion, to be blatantly honest (What???? I’m not doing enough already with three 60-minute workouts a week, biking to work and walking at lunch?), but I also know that it’s a must. To push through a plateau (or gain), I need to put in extra work. She also had a hunch that it could’ve been a birth control change last October that might’ve caused some of the weight gain. Well poo, but that won’t stop me either.

4. I was under a heaping load of stress last October. My husband was going to school full-time and with crazy schedules and sometimes having to help him, I was completely stressed out. Add to that the fact that he was unemployed, and it was a doozy of a few months. Happily, my husband has found a new job and is taking a break from school to pursue a new career. The stress has diminished tenfold since this same time last year. Yes, cortisol can really mess you up. But I am so thankful for the peace I’m feeling these days.

5. I started the Supreme 90 Day workout system (I’ll save the deets for another post) to kick through this final plateau and just to try a new fitness challenge. I’ve been used to going cardio-heavy, but this system is strength-driven, with cardio built into the circuits. Plus, it’s a program that gets me working out almost every day–but not to the point of overworking. Its designed to work different parts of the body on alternate days. In fact, it’s been told that it’s a comparable alternative to P90X. I’m noticing differences, but not so much in weight as in inches of fat disappearing. I’ve never measured myself like that before. It’s truly gratifying to see exactly how the work is paying off, instead of seeing the zero progress on the scale.

6. I’ve been really conscious about eating clean and I do notice that it makes me feel so much better. In fact, when I eat clean for a week and then try to eat French fries, I will inevitably get a stomachache. Such a strong motivator to put nutrients instead of crap into my body.
Well, there you have it, a personal look into what’s been going on with my weight and fitness goals these days. I think it’s best to be proactive about your health and take the steps necessary for change. It’s a lot of hardcore work, especially so for a body type like mine, but it’s best to be as informed as possible and rule out all possible hindrances. It’s also helpful to learn as much about yourself as possible. We all lose weight differently, and it’s good to know that so we can make educated changes based on our own bodies.

DIY Mantra Workout Towels

The second mantra project I bring you is my signature hand-embroidered mantra workout towels. I love this idea, because your workout mantra is literally staring you in the face when you drape it over your treadmill or elliptical machine. The bright colors and cute crafty look are motivating in themselves…at least to me!

These mantras are not only cute, but they’re also pretty easy and very inexpensive. I got my microfiber towels from the Dollar Store and embroidery floss is usually less than a dollar at the craft store. See, if you’re resourceful, you can turn anything into something lovely.

Mantra Workout Towel

*Cotton or microfiber towel (mine’s from the Dollar Store)
*Contrasting embroidery floss
*Embroidery hoop (the thrift stores have tons of these for like 25 cents)
*Tapestry needle
*Chalk or fabric pencil

1. Secure your embroidery hoop around the spot you intend to embroider.

2. Draw your mantra or design out in chalk first. The chalk didn’t work great of the microfiber material I was using, so you might try a fabric pencil. I would also suggest using cursive writing, as it’s easier to connect all the lines when stitching.

3. Backstitch along your penciled-in lines all the way to the end.

4. Voila! You have your own handstitched, meaningful workout towel. See, embroidery isn’t something just for old ladies, ya know!

I think a workout mantra that is in writing somehow is a much more potent motivator than a phrase you only keep in your head. You can’t forget those words when they’re smiling back at you from your machine. These colors make me so happy too. Enjoy!

DIY Bleach-Painted Mantra Shirt

As promised, I have a few Mantra projects up my sleeve that I’d like to share to bring your favorite mantra with you on your workouts. Having your goals and mantras in writing is powerful!

The first project is a bleaching painting project, adapted from this post at A Beautiful Mess.

I wanted to make a workout shirt that brought my favorite powerful words in front of me at the gym. Seeing the reflection in the mirrors provides an additional reminder to live my life with purpose. I, of course, used my personal tagline “Make it Happen.”

Bleach Painting

Supplies:
*A dark cotton shirt/garment you’d like to bleach
*A couple tablespoons of bleach in a disposable cup
*Q-tips
*A piece of cardboard
*Chalk

*Please take the necessary precautions when working with bleach.

1. Place cardboard between the layers of your shirt so the bleach doesn’t bleed through.

2. Draw your words/design on the shirt in chalk first to get the placement correct.

3. Dip Q-tips in bleach and follow along the chalk lines. Be careful that your Q-tips don’t drip on the T-shirt while you’re working. I worked outside right in the sun, which made the lines show up immediately, and really bright! Be careful though, because the bleach can eat right through the fabric if you let it sit too long or put too much on.

4. Once the design starts showing through, you can go back and fix any parts that need a fixin’.

5. You may need to handwash the shirt several times until the bleach is all washed out before putting it in your regular laundry.

That’s it! Such a cool, simple way to make any ordinary shirt your own. It’s an especially cool way to keep your workout mantra front and center.

Four Simple Goals

Following in Elsie’s footsteps, I decided to post four simple goals that I will be dedicating myself to for the remainder of the year.

1. Spruce A Space once a week: We are a typical family with typical “piles” in unsightly places and little non-beautiful messes. I would like to take time once a week to clean at least one little nook of dust and randomness. If I really want to impress myself, I might even add something beautiful in its place (a scented candle, a picture? We’ll see). *Reward for finishing: one small Etsy print purchase

2. Find Balance (in my checkbook): This is a boring one, but one I constantly struggle with and wish to overcome. Because, you see, my wellbeing depends on a balanced checkbook. When I have handfuls of receipts poking out of nooks in my purse and have that uneasy feeling of not quite knowing where we’re at, I feel unnerved. Even though its boring, this goal is dedicated to my personal happiness. I’ll sleep better, believe me. *Reward for finishing: a new checkbook cover

3. MOVE: I have a desk job and I often find myself coming to the realization that I haven’t moved from the time I punch in until lunchtime, except to take a bathroom break (oh, that sluggish feeling!). I need to get up at least once an hour to rest my eyes and move some blood around. This is a simple goal that I know I can do, I just need a silly written commitment like this to make it happen. *Reward for finishing: a new tea flavor

4. Art Journal Date: I signed up for Art Journal All Year, one of Elsie’s classes, at the beginning of the year and have yet to finish more than, um, three pages. I don’t want this to become a chore, so I’m changing the curriculum a little bit and making my art journal more of a dream journal where I make lists of things I want to accomplish and ways to bring them to fruition. The thing is, the process of journaling my dreams and making pretty pages is cathartic, stress-reducing, and productive. I also believe the process of dream planning leads to good things. It’s funny how those things you love the most get pushed to the side first.

I am not only posting these goals here and submitting them to A Beautiful Mess, but I am also tracking them on DailyFeats, along with a few other achievable goals. The site encourages you to make healthy habits stick by creating little goal “triggers” like “after I brush my teeth, I will drink one cup of water.” They also offer a built-in rewards system for each feat that you accomplish every day/week. Tangible prizes like $5 off coupons make really good incentives to make your life a little better. Hopefully these rewards will coincide with the rewards listed above (i.e. a $5 coupon to buy a new checkbook cover).

I encourage you to take Elsie’s challenge or just dedicate a little time to some “Daily Feats” that you’d like to accomplish. Being stagnant is suffocating. Taking action will transform your life.

Last Year’s Christmas Money

There’s something you need to know about me. I NEVER make impulse buys. I like to think on certain purchases for quite awhile before I hesitantly hand over my debit card. Even today, I told Hubster that I didn’t appreciate being bullied into going out to eat. He said, “That’s the only way I can even get you to go out.” And he had to give me the weekend to contemplate changing internet/cable providers. I just like to weigh the importance of things and make sure I’m not making rash decisions.

So, remember when I told you Hubster and I had a laugh about how he’d be through his Christmas money before New Year’s, and I’d have mine gone by June? Well, close… Mine was gone in August. Ha!

But the wait was sooo worth it. Meet my new favorite “gadget,” my 3-in-one Crosley CD player/record player/radio. I’ve been wanting a record player for years. I had a thrifted one in college, but a friend “borrowed” it for forever and returned it in “not working” condition. Forgive, forget, buy a new one. A beautiful one that totally goes with the antique chest it’s displayed on.

Peanut and Hubster even got a little involved. Hubster chose a few Dean Martin and Christmas records at a rummage sale and Peanut dances to Rolling Stones with me.

My other “Christmas” in August purchases? A Bon Iver record, Feist CD, Noah and the Whale CD, Exercise and Nutrition textbook (geek alert), pretty washi tape, and my very own copy of Born to Run. Could this get any better?

Do you still get “Christmas money?” And what do you usually buy with it? This is the only time I allow myself to buy superfluously. Of course there are always things around the house that take precedence, but special money doesn’t count, right?

Perseid Picnic

Since we seem to be having a tradition theme going on here, I thought I’d show you another one of our family’s newest traditions, since this is the first year Peanut is old enough to get it.

We decided that our family should definitely have a Perseid Picnic each year. The timing is perfect. Every year, the Perseid meteor shower happens around August 21: right in the middle of summer break. It’s also warm enough to have a nighttime picnic. What better reason to have a nighttime picnic than a magical meteor shower?

I packed up Peanut and his cousin and we headed to the county park. We found a really dark parking lot and shut off all the lights. The fact that it was dark made Peanut feel a little on edge, but we calmly talked about fun things to keep his mind off the dark shadows.

We lined the bed of our truck with two porch chair cushions and snuggled in under a shared blanket.

I’m pretty sure my nephew saw an actual shooting star (by his sudden energetic “there’s one, THERE’S ONE!), but Peanut wasn’t patient, still or unafraid enough to witness one.

The two adventurers had to bring their binoculars and flashlights, even though they’re completely unnecessary for stargazing, because that’s just what little Daniel Boons do, yo! We also had a few midnight snacks: unnecessary also, but part of the fun.

After we I saw about a half dozen meteors, I packed up my two sleepy little fellas and we headed home. A late night Perseid picnic is a good excuse to take off of work the next day, no? We even had a little sleepover to make the night extra memorable. We’ll be back next year, for sure.

Summer Fun at the County Fair

Two weekends ago, we bought tickets for the local county fair.

We didn’t realize we’d be riding 90% of the rides with a 4-year-old. But oh, how fun that was!

His favorite ride? The Starship 3000 (aka the Gravitron). You know the one, where the little spaceship-like thing spins really fast and you’re pinned against the wall. This just cracks me up.

He seemed way too small to be riding those fast-whipping rides, but he loooooved them. And because we could all go together, Hubster and I loved it too! We’ll be back next year.

Zucchini Pizza

How our countertop has looked all month

Last year, we had way too much zucchini. This year, we only had one plant, and we still have more zucchini than we quite know what to do with. So, we’re experimenting.

Besides slicing them up and putting them in eggs and making 11 batches zucchini brownies, we wanted to try some different ways of preparing the vitamin-loaded vegetable while we can, before they rot. Enter, mini pizzas:

Mini Zucchini Pizzas

Ingredients:
Large zucchini, cut into discs
Pizza sauce (or tomato sauce)
Shredded cheese of choice
Toppings of choice <–we chose spinach and mushrooms
Oregano and garlic to season, if desired

Spread a small spoonful of pizza sauce over each zucchini slice. Then, sprinkle a pinch of cheese on each. Finally, add your toppings. Cook in the oven at 400 degrees for about 20 minutes or until cheese melts. You can’t quite eat them like a slice of pizza as they’re still moist. Use a fork.

Next time I might try cooking them on a baking rack so they’re a little less floppy. So healthy! Enjoy!

Summer Book Club

We’re trying to soak up the last bits of sun that this year affords us. We’re not ready to talk about fall and apple cider and cable knits quite yet, even though we love those things too.

We’re still talking about pitching a tent out in the backyard for the night and eating as much watermelon as our bellies can comply with.

We’re also still pitching our “reading tent” in an effort to read more books, limit screen time and enjoy the warm air.

I mean, why would you read on the couch, when you can read inside a special book nook?
